Its central conceit can be accused of being ostentatious, but Atkinson’s gift is to create characters that are all-encompassing, believable, and utterly compelling.

You grieve for them when they pass away, you cheer for them when they reappear in another timeline, it’s amazing. Meanwhile, her prose just shines, and I can’t remember the last time I read a book that made me laugh and laugh one moment and then hold my breath sadly the next time. There’s a lot going on here and you learn a lot about the people who made Britain’s modern history, but Atkinson delivered it all with genuine skill and compassion. dust and noise, balanced with the occasional small human moments and specially evoked beauty.
