In the forty-first installment of Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct series, the detectives of the 87th Precinct come into the new year. One particularly gruesome crime came when a couple returned home from a New Year’s Eve party to find their sixteen-year-old nanny had stabbed her with a knife. death and their child suffocated. The most likely suspect appeared to be the boyfriend the babysitter had thrown a few weeks earlier, but he proved difficult to find and since the crime happened on the busiest party night of the year, her testimony witnesses are not as reliable. they can be.

As Steve Carella and Meyer Meyer try to find the party responsible for the murder, Detective Bert Kling finds himself in the midst of a war between two drug cartels that is becoming increasingly brutal. Both sides seem to be very well armed and Kling, unfortunately, seems to be right in the middle of the fire.

Another detective who had a very disturbing experience in the last novel of the series was determined to give up the force but had trouble convincing the department’s psychiatrist to sign his resignation. It all adds up to another fast-paced and engaging story from one of the genre’s masters.
