Mexican Gothic By: Silvia Moreno-Garcia – Audiobook Online

Mexican Gothic is a literary fiction book by author Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
New York Times bestseller.

A detached villa. A cold charismatic aristocrat. And a brave social site is drawn to expose their dangerous secrets.
After receiving a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging someone to save her from a mysterious apocalypse, Noemí Taboada travels to High Place, a remote home in the Mexican countryside. She wasn’t sure what she would find – her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, was a stranger and Noemí knew little about the area.

Noemí is also an unlikely savior: She’s a glamorous newcomer, and her chic dresses and flawless red lipstick are more suited to cocktail parties than a detective. amateur death. She’s also tough and smart, has an indomitable will, and she’s fearless: Not afraid of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and seductive; not his father, the ancient patriarch apparently fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which began to invade Noemi’s dreams with images of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this harsh abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí but may also be hiding dark things about his family’s past. There are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once huge fortune and crumbling mining empire keep them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper, she uncovers stories of violence and madness.

Mexican Gothic is the first book I’ve read by this author. The cover caught my attention and I knew I had to pick it for my Book of the Month.

Noemí is a free spirited young woman living in Mexico City. She likes to dress up and be part of the elite crowd. She goes against what her parents want, but she knows how to live and have fun. When her father shows her a letter from her cousin living in a small town hours away, they both know she must go to her cousin and see what is wrong.

Catalina is Noemí’s cousin living in High Place. She has married into a family that used to own a mining company, but it hasn’t been open for many years. High Place is a dilapidated home, but you can see it was once a beauty. It’s a “town” within itself. It’s inhabitants don’t leave the house and whoever lives there can never leave. What is lurking in the dark, damp corners of High Place and can Noemí get her cousin to leave??

Moreno-Garcia built a world from a home that became a main character. She added many different elements of history and old tales to envision what was happening at High Place. The characters in town and the characters of High Place were so vivid in detail and emotions. I became on edge waiting for anyone to help Noemí see that she wasn’t crazy, but the house can hear all. The story was beautifully layered with characters of good and evil, but figuring out who one can trust is the first battle in setting the characters free. It was creepy and oh so good.
