No-No Boy – Audiobook Online

No-No Boy – Audiobook Online by John OkadaRuth Ozeki.

Originally published in 1956, No-No Boy was largely ignored by the public eager to put World War II and Japanese interns behind them. It was not until the mid-1970s that a generation of Japanese-American writers and scholars recognized the novel’s importance and popularized it as one of literature’s most powerful pieces of evidence of the experience of Asian Americans.

No-No Boy tells the story of Ichiro Yamada, a fictionalized version of real-life “no-no boys”. Yamada answered “no” twice to a mandatory government questionnaire about whether he served in the armed forces and swore allegiance to the United States.

Unwilling to commit to the country that held him and his family, Ichiro spends two years in prison and hostility from his family and community when he returns home to Seattle.

As Ozeki writes, Ichiro’s “haunted, tormented” voice breaks the stereotype of Japan’s postwar “model minority”, revealing a fractured community and “a fever of guilt, anger, and anger.” one’s evil and blame” as he tries to negotiate his way back to the broken world.

Having lived in California in the late 50s and 60s, I can attest to the racism and violence of many whites during this period. However, there are still good people, which Mr. Okada writes about.

He also conveys some of the intergenerational conflicts between the 1st and 2nd generation Japanese, in this country. Shown are some differences in opinion among Japanese Americans.

Some are eager to prove that they are loyal Americans, which can be intimidating. Others defy a country that imprisons them, and steals all their worldly possessions and possessions. These conflicts still exist to this day.
