One Good Knight/ Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms, Book 2 – Audiobook Online

One Good Knight is the second literary fiction book in the Five Hundred Kingdoms series by author Mercedes Lackey.
Traditionally, plundering dragons were only appeased by the sacrifice of a virgin. And so the practical-minded Princess Andromeda – with the encouragement of her mother’s court – reluctantly volunteered to perform her duty, asking only for a sword for self-defense. Well, her offer was accepted, but the weapon was unavailable, and so Andromeda had to face the dragon alone.

Until a Champion comes to her rescue – something like that. Sir George doesn’t quite defeat the dragon, but when Andromeda finishes rescuing herself, she discovers that beneath the well-meaning Good Knight despite the inexperienced heroes is a distant story. more… However, Andromeda couldn’t let her coastal country be in further danger from the dragon returning, and so she and…well…George joined the search for the dragon’s lair. But even – especially – in the Five Hundred Kingdoms, it was not easy to go against Tradition. It requires the strongest will, rather than a bit of stubbornness, quick thinking, and a refusal to give up, no matter what happens along the way.

I liked this book as much as the first (which seems to be the main complaint most people have: they prefer the first). This is only the second book by Mercedes Lackey that I have read (the first is the first in the series).

This book is about Queen Cassiopeia and Princess Andromeda (Andie). Andie loves to climb trees, read, and needs glasses to see. All this and more let Andie know that the Queen desires another daughter. Solon was the queen’s advisor and Andie found the idea helpful by researching pertinent topics of everyday situations in court and presenting reports to Solon. Both Solon and Cassiopeia find this helpful but don’t want Andie to dig too far.

Soon a dragon began to attack the country and virgin sacrifices were performed weekly to keep the dragon happy. After six months from this date, Andie’s name is called and this is where the story really starts to pick up speed. In other reviews I’ve seen people say Andie’s love is obvious, but I have to say it wasn’t for me until I was 84% done. I like the change with the Champion. The original story of Andromeda being sacrificed to the kraken is clearly parallel to Andie being sacrificed to the dragon.
