This book is not the typical James Bond movie where Bond is the glitzy, infallible and ladylike spy. The book brings readers closer to the James Bond style that fans are familiar with. Although it was a few years before the big screen version, Bond was finally developed with the personality that Sean Connery would later refine and create his own in the movies.

However, what is interesting is that in the book, Bond is overshadowed in the story by Ali Karim Bey – the head of the British Secret Service ‘T Station’ in Istanbul, Turkey. Bey is the biggest character in the book, and Fleming has been happy to develop his character. Bond doesn’t really have any character time until chapter 11, leaving room for Fleming to show the reader everything. how things are done behind closed doors at the international criminal organization – SMERSH.
