C. J. Box’s best-selling Joe Pickett novel has earned him a spot on every serious suspense fan’s favorite list. The tightly constructed Out of Range takes game warden Joe to a new, remote rhythm in the vast countryside of Wyoming to investigate the previous warden’s suspicious death.

Every part of Joe Picket is better than the last, and this one I can’t turn off. Each book reveals much of what makes the characters so engaging and empathetic, even characters I tend to hate.
I appreciate that Box’s mention of action in previous novels is so succinct, so I don’t feel like wasting my time hearing what I already know. For this reason, however, I encourage Joe Picket fans to purchase the print edition or audiobook, if you can find one, of “Winterkill”. This is another great book, and explains a lot of why and how Joe, Mary Beth, and Nate became who they were. The tapes feature another narrator besides David Chandler, and he does a great job.

But back to “Out of Range,” the story of finding Joe in Jackson’s Hole, without a wife or girls to pick him up… and the tangled threads of that situation bad enough to make a person and all lose their certainty of who they are and where their allegiance lies. Add all the mysteries, conflicts, and characters the new digs throw at Joe, the threats from inside and outside the family, and you’ll have a part of Joe Picket you won’t want to end up with. .
