Purple Hearts is a literary fiction book by author Tess Wakefield.
When a soldier with a troubled past and a struggling musician agree to marry for the sake of the military, neither of them expect much after saying “I do”. Then tragedy strikes, and the line between real and fake begins to blur in a clever and unexpected romance, perfect for fans of Nicholas Sparks and Jojo Moyes.

Cassie Salazar and Luke Morrow couldn’t be more different. The sharp-witted Cassie works nightly at a bar in Austin, Texas, to make ends meet while pursuing her dream of becoming a singer/songwriter. Luke is an intern in the military, preparing to go on a mission, finding solace in the unwavering discipline of service. But a chance meeting at Cassie’s bar changes their lives.

This has all the works of a great book. Love the premise, love the characters. Liked the book but didn’t like it. I find it very easy to get distracted while reading – and I think that’s entirely because the chapters are so short. You only get three – four pages on push – from each preview point as it flips back to another character. It made me feel like we were just getting to know them and then it would move on.

As a diabetic, it’s great to see a character deal with it in an almost realistic way and it makes me feel incredibly grateful to be in the UK where I don’t have to think about paying for it. money for essential medicines that I have to take every day.

This story has great potential but doesn’t quite get there for me. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie version released on Netflix next week. Sofia Carson has a great voice and I think she’s going to be a great Cassie.
