Rage Inside the Machine – Audiobook Online

Rage Inside the Machine is a book about computers by author Robert Elliott Smith.
This book shows how deeply unscientific ideas are codified in our technology infrastructure. Offering a fresh, serious look at how technology got us here, Rage Inside the Machine challenges the long-held assumption that technology is an apolitical and unethical force.

We live in a world that is increasingly driven by technology; We seem to be controlled by technology as much as we are controlled by laws and regulations. Scary is that often, the influence of technology in and on our lives goes completely unchallenged by citizens and governments. We comfort ourselves with the gentle chorus that technology is not ethical and does not represent prejudice, and that only people who use technology have certain aspects of it.

But is this statement really true? Dr. Robert Smith argues that is dangerously untrue in the modern era. Having worked in the field of artificial intelligence for more than 30 years, Smith reveals clear evidence that the mechanical agents of our lives actually have, or at least embody, morality: They are not is the morality of the progressive modern society we imagine we are moving toward. Instead, as we are just beginning to see – in the US elections and Brexit, to name just a few – there are increasing instances of machine bigotry, greed and the crass manipulation of copies. our most basic ability.

Having spent more than 30 years working in the software industry, I think I know a lot about our current algorithmic world. I was wrong. Rage Inside the Machine is an excellent, eye-opening discussion of that topic, and even more importantly – how it came to be. It combines history, economics, science, math (which isn’t science, thanks for prying…) to make its point. If you’re not interested or don’t like math, don’t worry – this book is more about us than about machines.
Admittedly, I think the author’s view of the limits of AI right now may not be around for many years to come. There may still be a paradigm shift that will allow AI to be closer to the truth. But even so, as a description of the current situation and what has happened, this book is excellent.
