In the early 1980s, Jack Ryan was a teacher, historian, and a recently retired Marine who was living in England temporarily. He gained the attention of the Deputy Director of the CIA after a series of deadly encounters with an IRA group. The Deputy Director was Vice Admiral James Greer. When he requested Jack for joining them then he was quick to respond. That given opportunity was quite irresistible for Jake.
This opportunity was all over him and he forgot about all his other work. It was more so because of an extraordinary document that crossed his desk on his very first day. The information was about the new Pope delivering a private ultimatum just now to Warsaw. If the government persisted here then he would feel compelled to resign the papacy. Further, he would also go back to Poland.
All these things would go on to have big consequences. Yuri, another man in Moscow was anticipating the same consequences. He was the chairman of the KGB. He didn’t like what all this meant for him or his country.
The character of Jack Ryan is quite likable and smart. He makes the entire novel so interesting. He has managed to register his character as one of the finest in contemporary American fiction.
