Rising from the dark depths of the Underdark, the drowned man once again meets the dwarves of Mithral Hall. Bruenor Battlehammer, with Drizzt by his side, won’t fall without a fight – but they will have to fight without Wulfgar or Catti-brie by their side.

This story serves to end the drowning stories surrounding Drizzt and his friends. There’s a lot of action, especially in the last third of the book, and you’ll be hard-pressed to put down until the end. There’s very little to complain about about this Dungeons & Dragons-inspired series as long as you approach the story as it is. While there is little hint of possible romances there is little to be found there. What you will find in the apple count are frenzied battles, Extraordinary Magic, and a completely unexpected Mur that will leave your faction vulnerable.

I think the reason I read these books is because I secretly believe that if Salvatore can publish a novel, maybe I can too. Entire sections of the novel feel lifted from the AD&D Second Edition source books. In this case, Time of Trouble seems to be barely registered in this part of Toril. What could have been an interesting twist in a magic-heavy world is wasted exploring psionics and assembling a damaged magic item. The moment things get interesting, they go back to typing.

Not only do we register the onset and rapid resolution of an anti-magic phenomenon, but we then witness the title’s “Siege”. As usual, luck is always on the side of Drizz’t and his friends and the most unlikely situations lead to a rather boring ending.
