Song Yet Sung is a story of tragic victory, violent decisions, and unexpected kindness.

“Song Yet Sung” is a portrait of slaves and impoverished whites in the struggling lives of farmers and oyster farmers as well as slave traders and thieves. in Maryland before the Civil War. A character-driven novel — often shocking by its brutality — the book focuses on the desire and plan to break the chains of enslaved people and their captors, who were equally determined to keep them enslaved. None of the black or white people in this book are rich, but we know very little about what happens to the thousands of dollars that black kidnappers make for sale. In this book, we also see how poverty and a culture that allows one to possess one’s own kind dehumanize all people.

“Song Yet Sung” opens with the story of fourteen slaves being kidnapped and hidden in the attic. Liz, the newest prisoner, was shot in the face, a small ball stuck in her forehead. Though half-starved, exhausted, and bleeding close to death, she escaped her fellow prisoners with “visions” and subconscious, prophetic miracles. For those revelations, she was dubbed the “Dreamer”. a nickname she would carry for the rest of her life.

Liz’s journey to freedom lasted her whole life. She shares her visions with others she meets on the gospel path. Her vision is powerful and defines freedom as the experience yet to come. Her image is of a “Dreamer” preaching the gospel of freedom yet to come for all to see and embrace. Each character in the book maintains their own beliefs about life and freedom. James McBride has done an excellent job of capturing the voice of humanity.
