Thirteen-year-old Prince Kyril and Mags and Amily’s 14-year-old son, Tory, “share” the Gift of Foresight – although neither was chosen. They train themselves, though for now, their Shared Gift only allows them to see what’s going on with their immediate family members.

After much debate, the Herald’s Collegium decided to test and train them. That’s when the surprises begin. They do not share a Gift; they have two complementary Gifts that work together in a way the Messengers have never seen before. Tory is Farseer – Kee’s gift is to extend his range beyond a few dozen feet.

Their gift becomes important when Mags receives a desperate message from his cousin Bey, the head of a mysterious tribe of assassins, the Sleepgivers. Bey’s eldest daughter has been kidnapped, but he doesn’t know why or by whom. He’s calling on the debt Mags owes him to find his daughter before it’s too late.

Tory is sure that if anyone can find her, he will. But that means leaving Valdemar for a dangerous and unknown country. And it will mean bringing a Royal Prince with him.

Mercedes Lackey continues into the next generation after Mags and Amelie, following their children’s adventures into the perilous kingdom of Karst. Apparently the female Sunlord has moved, as the Karst priests and their demons return to their old tricks. Lackey and her master narrator Nick Podehl once again tell a story about Valdemar that is fun to listen to.

The plot starts out a bit disjointed but improves over time. It’s great to pick up some of the previously developed characters and bring them back! I felt the ending was too rushed and could have more plot, which is disappointing. As always, I love Valdemar’s stories and characters!!
