Lucas Davenport has witnessed many gruesome murder scenes. This is one of the worst. In the small town of Deephaven in Minnesota, an entire family was killed – husband, wife, two daughters, dog.

The scene ignites Lucas’s cop instincts – it looks a lot like the kind of earth-shattering punishment he sometimes sees in drug murders. But this is a serious upmarket town, and the husband is the executive vice president of a large bank. It just doesn’t seem right.

Until it does. And where it leads Lucas will take him into the darkest nightmare of his life.

Prey #22 features Lucas Davenport dealing with Mexican drug dealers slaughtering a suburban family – but what in the end?

The presence of the Mexican drug cartel brings another dimension to this book. Contrary to a lot of prey books that deal with serial killers or serial killer psychology, the villain this time has a well-defined ability to do evil when told in flashback and even in the events of the book. a very different aspect from most books on prey. Usually, there’s a serial killer – a really twisted guy with twisted motives, OR an unscrupulous bad guy who has to keep killing people to try to cover up his crime(s)… but always a mystery. There are many groups of bad guys here, but all have clear goals even as the investigation is ongoing.

I have read almost all the books by Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers by John Sandford. I’ll let someone else talk about the plot and I’ll talk about the author’s style. These books are great. Virgil Flowers’ books add humour, but each story begins with a senseless murder/despicable crime. investigations go nowhere, often there’s another story going on underneath. They were close to solving it, but they left it unfinished and failed. But. There’s a hidden clue and then the big ending, always tense, always shocking but also a revelation’ Good read.
