The greed for power certainly makes you do strange things and sometime you even show readiness towards losing your precious life in the process. Andrew Rowe presents the same kind of thing in the start of Arcane Ascension series that provide us a chance to have a look in the world of magic. Corin Cadence the main character however is not the power hungry type character, all she wants is her brother back. Her brother was one of those power frenzied people who could risk their life for a little rise in the human world.
Thus he went into the Serpent spire for magical powers that are promised to person who is able to return back after facing the devils and monsters that lie inside the tower. Not everyone is lucky enough to return, but those successful starts to have magical powers.
There is still more to it, the one reaching the last floor of the towers can meet the goddess in person and thus would be able to make his or her dream wish come true. Corin wants to reach the last floor not because she wants any of the powers she just wants to request the goddess to give her back the only relation she was left with. Six Sacred Swords and On the Shoulders of Titans also portray same kind of struggle but never has the writer painted such a strong female character before in his work.
Nick Podehl gives a strong voice to Corin as well that was needed to enhance the strength of the character. The plot has a wonderful beginning and a fine climax along with a masterly written ending.
