The Abstainer – Audiobook Online

An Irishman in 19th-century England is forced to take sides when his grandson joins the bloody underground movement for independence in this gripping novel by acclaimed author The North Water.

Manchester, England, 1867. Rebels will be hanged at dawn, and their brotherhood has plotted revenge. Stephen Doyle, an Irish-American Civil War veteran, arrives in Manchester from New York with a thirst for blood. He joined the Fenians, a secret society intent on ending British rule in Ireland by any means necessary.

Head Constable James O’Connor ran away from grief and drinking in Dublin for a sober start in Manchester. His job is to uncover and stop the Fenians’ plans, whatever they may be. When a long-lost grandson arrives at O’Connor’s doorstep looking for work, he can’t predict how his fragile new life will be in jeopardy – and his and How will Doyle fatally intertwine.

In this gripping tale of the underground Irish war for independence, the author of The North Water takes listeners once again to a time when blood begets blood. Moving from the dirt and noise of industrial Manchester to the quiet hills of rural Pennsylvania, The Abstainer is a poignant novel in which two men, haunted by the past and haunted by their past motivated by the need for justice and punishment, to fight for life and legacy.

The book is incredibly well written but disappointingly realistic. Title is important. I listened to it and the narrator was excellent. The article is by Dickensian as assessed by the New York Times. And the story is like the history of Ireland, frustrating and feeling hopeless.
