Simon McCartney was a cocky young English mountaineer who climbed many of the hardest routes in the Alps in the late 70s, but a chance meeting in Chamonix in 1977 with “Stonemaster” Jack Roberts who California dramatically changed both of their lives – and almost ended. by Simon.
Inspired by a photo of Bradford Washburn published in Mountain magazine, their first target was the 5,500-foot north face of Mount Huntington, one of the most dangerous walls in the Alaska Range. The result was a path so difficult and severe that for decades no one believed they had climbed it – it has not been repeated to this day. Then, raising the bar even higher, they made their first climb to the southwest face of Denali, a near-fatal climb for Simon, and a climb that would break the bond between him and climbing, separating two young climbers. But the bond between Simon and Jack can’t sleep forever. A later life, a chance to reconnect with Jack gave Simon the chance to bury the ghosts of what happened high above Denali, as he nearly faced death.
The Bond is Simon McCartney’s story of these legendary climbs.
This book is interesting and sad, sometimes funny. Not your typical climbing book, the later the better. Unfortunately the narration is out of place, sometimes it is difficult to keep track of whose diary is read and sometimes the narrator acts too much. But despite that, we would recommend the book to read.
