In this third episode, several months have passed, and two of Roland’s new friends have become trained shooters. Eddie Dean gave up heroin, and two versions of Odetta joined in, becoming the stronger and more balanced personality of Susannah Dean. But while fighting The Pusher in 1977 in New York, Roland changed ka by saving the life of Jake Chambers, a boy who – in Roland’s world – died. Now Roland and Jake exist in different worlds, but they are linked by the same madness: the paradox of double memory.

Roland, Susannah, and Eddie must drag Jake into the Mid-World and then follow the Path of the Light to the Dark Tower. Along the way, our quartet stumbles upon the ruined city of Lud, and is caught between the warring gangs of Pubes and the Grays. The only way to escape Lud is to awaken Blaine the Mono, a maddening train with a passion for puzzles and suicide journeys.

This is my favorite of the Dark Tower books. Frank Muller at his best. I miss him so. I will probably get way more than my money’s worth with this on for I will read it over and over in my many trips to the Dark Tower. Long days and pleasant nights.
