All good things must come to an end, Constant Listener, and not even Stephen King can write a story that lasts forever. The author is concerned that the story of Roland Deschain’s relentless quest for the Dark Tower has tested the patience of those who have followed it since the first chapters. But read it a while longer, if you’re happy, because this volume is the last, and often the last is the best.
Roland’s ka-tet is still intact, although scattered where and when. Susannah-Mia was brought from Dixie Pig (in the summer of 1999) to a delivery room (actually a room of horrors) in Thunderclap’s Fedic Station; Jake and Father Callahan, with Oy walking between them, had entered restaurants on Lex and 61st streets with their weapons drawn, little aware of how numerous and dangerous their enemies were. Roland and Eddie were with John Cullum in Maine, in 1977, looking for a place on Turtleback Lane where “walkers” were common. They desperately want to get back together with the others, especially with Susannah, but they have realized that the world they need to escape from is the only world that matters.
So the audiobook opens, like a door leading to Stephen King’s imagination reaching its peak. You have come this far. Go a little further. Come all the way. The sound you hear could be a door slamming behind you. Welcome to the Dark Tower.
Guidall’s narration is mesmerizing. Have read the first six books and thought I’d try listening to the last one to savor it and make it last longer. I’m through the third disk and I’m so glad I did this. King is a master and the narration brings all my fav characters to life. Highly recommended.
