Gabriel Allon is finally getting old and finally realizing his human limitations. This story moves him across the board, and promises to change his career as well as his family life. It’s a great deal to complete in one book. The show is, as usual, an unwilling Gabriel to call to action. But somehow, he looks more human in this. By teaming up with old foes who present themselves as just as good as he is, he improves on what the author tantalizingly alludes to perhaps his ultimate “secret” assassination mission. ta. All of Silva’s books are excellent. What’s interesting is that he’s letting his protagonist age and perhaps become tender. It will be interesting to see how far he goes in the next books.

The plot is well-paced, easy to understand (if you read/listen to spy novels, you know they can easily get complicated) and the characters are believable. Allon is his fierce yet controlling person, Chiara is a little more involved in this. Several new characters have been introduced and I hope to see them again in future books. Exciting and largely unpredictable. As usual, George Guidall’s narration is perfect. He could read his grocery list to me and maybe I would be intrigued.
