From the New York Times bestselling author comes a breathtaking fantasy story about a cursed kingdom, warring clans, and unexpected salvation.
Bayr of Saylok, the bastard child of a powerful and jealous chieftain, is haunted by a curse once leveled by his dying mother. Exchanged, abandoned, and rarely loved, she cursed the land with her words: From this day on, there will be no daughters in Saylok.
Growing up with the Guardians of Temple Hill, Bayr was endowed with extraordinary powers. But he’s also blessed with an overly human heart that beats with one purpose: to protect Alba, the first daughter born in nearly two decades, and the salvation of a country in peril.
Now that Saylok’s fate belongs to Alba and Bayr, their relationship deepens with each whisper of the coming chaos. Tasked with battling the enemies of his people, both internally and externally, Bayr is further motivated by the love of a girl who has defied Saylok’s woes.
What Bayr and Alba don’t know is that they once threatened the king, a greedy man who built his throne on lies, murder, and betrayal. There is only one way to protect their land from the corruption that has invaded it. By breaking the curse, they can defeat the king… but they can also destroy themselves.
I loved this book, the story, the characters, how it was written, everything. I could not stop listening to this audiobook and I was hooked from the start. My favourite quote from this story is “Comfort is not love”.
