The Glass Rainbow by James Lee Burke is a crime mystery novel featuring Detective Dave Robicheaux back in his hometown of New Iberia, Louisiana. He becomes involved in a particularly challenging case involving the brutal murders of seven young women in a neighboring Jefferson Davis Parish. As he delves deeper into the investigation, Dave finds himself confronted by a tangled web of corruption and deceit that threatens to destroy him and those closest to him. The book is filled with vivid, atmospheric descriptions of the Louisiana landscape and complex, well-drawn characters, making it a gripping and unforgettable read for fans of the crime genre.

James Lee Burke’s eagerly awaited new novel finds Detective Dave Robicheaux back in New Iberia, Louisiana, and embroiled in the most harrowing and dangerous case of his career. Seven young women in neighboring Jefferson Davis Parish have been brutally murdered. While the crimes have all the telltale signs of a serial killer, the death of Bernadette Latiolais, a high-school honor student, doesn’t fit: she is not the kind of hapless and marginalized victim psychopaths usually prey upon. Robicheaux and his best friend, Clete Purcel, confront Herman Stanga, a notorious pimp and crack dealer whom both men despise. When Stanga turns up dead shortly after a fierce beating by Purcel, in front of numerous witnesses, the case takes a nasty turn, and Clete’s career and life are hanging by threads over the abyss.

Adding to Robicheaux’s troubles was the issue of his daughter, Alafair, taking a sabbatical from Stanford Law School to finish her novel. Her literary pursuits have brought her into the arms of Kermit Abelard, the celebrated novelist and descendant of a once prominent Louisiana family whose fortunes are slowly sinking into the rot of the world. Louisiana subculture. Abelard’s relationship with best-selling author and former inmate Robert Weingart, a man who uses and eliminates the likes of Kleenex, causes Robicheaux to fear that Alafair might be ruined by the man she loves. When his daughter seems to drift away from him, he wonders if he has fallen victim to his own paranoia. But as usual, Robicheaux’s instincts proved right and he found himself facing a greater degree of crime than any enemy he had faced in the past.

Set in an Edenic paradise threatened by evil forces, James Lee Burke’s The Glass Rainbow has been hailed as perhaps the best novel in the Robicheaux series.

Once again, my favorite author and my favorite narrator on the same piece. No one lets you escape or puts you in a place like James Lee Burke and I find myself seaching for Patton’s work on Audible just because he is so outstanding.
