Edward Baltram is a troubled young man who is haunted by the memory of his friend’s death. He seeks redemption by joining a community led by his estranged father, a charismatic and enigmatic figure who runs a home for people with mental disabilities. As Edward becomes more involved in the community, he begins to confront his own demons and grapple with the moral implications of his actions.

The novel also features a cast of complex and flawed characters, including Edward’s sister, who struggles with her own sense of guilt and responsibility; his father’s assistant, who harbors a dark secret; and a young woman who becomes romantically involved with Edward.

Overall, “The Good Apprentice” is a thought-provoking exploration of morality and human nature that delves into the complexities of guilt, redemption, and the search for meaning in life.

Edward Baltram is overwhelmed with guilt. His nasty little prank has gone horribly wrong: He has fed his closest friend a sandwich laced with a hallucinogenic drug and the young man has fallen out of a window to his death. Edward searches for redemption through a reunion with his famous father, the reclusive painter Jesse Baltram. Funny and compelling, The Good Apprentice is at once a supremely sophisticated entertainment and an inquiry into the spiritual crises that afflict the modern world.

I loved this book- her characters and their minds and feelings – all are fascinating and make for compelling listening.
The narration is the best I have ever heard. Christopher Cazenove is utterly brilliant – what a great loss to us all that he died so young.
