The Honor of the Queen By David Weber – Audiobook Online

The Honor of the Queen is a science fiction novel written by David Weber and published in 1993. It is the second book in the Honor Harrington series, which follows the adventures of a skilled and honorable officer in the Royal Manticoran Navy.

The story takes place shortly after the events of the first book, On Basilisk Station. Honor Harrington is given command of a new ship, the HMS Fearless, and sent on a diplomatic mission to the planet Grayson. Grayson is a deeply religious world that has recently made contact with Manticore, and tensions are high between the two nations.

Honor must navigate these tensions while also dealing with internal conflicts on her own ship. Her executive officer, Scotty Tremaine, is resentful of her authority and challenges her decisions at every turn. Meanwhile, Honor must also confront her own feelings for Paul Tankersley, a Grayson officer who becomes her ally and confidant.

As Honor works to establish diplomatic relations with Grayson, she discovers a plot by a rogue group of Manticoran officers to use Grayson as a pawn in their own political machinations. Honor must use all of her skills and resources to stop them before it’s too late.

Overall, The Honor of the Queen is a thrilling space opera that combines political intrigue, military strategy, and personal drama. It explores themes of honor, duty, loyalty, and sacrifice, and offers a complex and engaging portrayal of its protagonist.

It’s hard to give peace a chance when the other side sees conquest as the only option and sneak attack the best means to that end. That was why the Manticore Kingdom needed allies against the Haven Republic, and the planet Grayson was strategically located to make a very good ally indeed. But the Queen’s Foreign Office overlooked a “small cultural difference” when it chose Honor Harrington to carry its flag: women on the planet Grayson had no rank or rights and Honor’s mere presence is an unacceptable insult to every male on the planet.

At first, Honor didn’t take it personally. But, over time, such treatment becomes too burdensome and she plans to retreat until Grayson’s fraternal planet attacks without warning. Now, Honor must stay and prevail, not only for her honor, but for her sovereignty, for the honor of the Queen.

Notes from Author David Weber
There has been some confusion — not to say, um, heated debate, readers and fans as readers and fans — about the correct pronunciation of “Manticoran.” The truth, alas, is a link that has been left out. Error! An error occurred. Please try again later. Something went wrong… and it’s not Audible’s fault. It’s mine. Before Audible recorded Honor Harrington’s first book, narrator Allyson Johnson and I not only corresponded via e-mail, but actually talked on the phone. She wanted to be absolutely certain that she had correctly pronounced the name, the place, the country with the stars, and so on, and I went to great lengths to make sure that all of her questions were answered. And so they were. Unfortunately, at some point in this process, I replied to one of her e-mails by telling her that “Man-ti-core-ahn” is pronounced “Man- tik-er-ahn.” I can’t say exactly how this happened at this point, except blushing to reveal that the original e-mail was still intact, confirming to the world that it was indeed my fault. I can only consider it a temporary mental glitch on my part and ask for your forgiveness. However, if you have to blame someone for the confusion, it has to be me and not Audible, who did everything possible to make it right.

In this book, Honor Harrington’s character and history are further developed and much of the background information covered in later books is presented. The story flows smoothly and the reading is excellent. I’m not sure why or if there’s some logic to specific accents chosen by the narrator, but it helps keep the characters organized very well. Highly recommend watching more On Basilisk Station…
