The Iron Sea has fallen for this baby boomer generation and is the son of a World War II veteran. Its narrative fluently and very reliably embraces both sides’ perspectives, with heroism and humanity highlighted by the Allied and German navies. The main characters and villains are practically a navy of battleships, destroyers, U-boats, X-subs, and others—each with their own personality. I gave a copy to my 14 year old grandson who is a World War II enthusiast. However, his father was the first to turn the pages and was fascinated by Simon Read’s writing and storytelling.
