The trilogy’s climactic episode begins with the Giant Sea of Demons and continues with the Land of Silver Apples which opens with a violent tornado. (Odin on a wild hunt, as seen by Thorgil, a young maniac.) The fields of Jack’s hometown are ravaged, the winter ahead looks bleak, and a monster – a the rickshaw puller – has invaded the woods outside the town.

But at the hands of best-selling author Nancy Farmer, the worst prospects turn into rewards for any reader. Soon after, Jack, Thorgil and Bard set out on a journey to find a way to make amends after the death caused by Father Severus. Their destination is Notland, the kingdom of the besiegers, although they will face many challenges and enemies before they reach it. Perfectly researched and a blend of the lore of Christian, Pagan and Norse traditions, this expertly woven story is gripping suspense and ultimately testament to love.

Excellent narrator and a powerful story with a bittersweet ending. After starting this series in elementary school, with it being my first chapter book (yes), I never took the time to read the Sea of Trolls sequels. Now that I’m a decade and a half later, I’m glad I finally did. But wow, I didn’t expect to have so much emotion and attachment to the characters and their journey. The whole series is amazing and one that I look forward to hearing over and over again just like the first book I started reading.
