The city burned beneath the Dream Moon.
In the ancient city of Gujaareh, peace is the only law. On its rooftops and in the darkness of its cobbled streets, the Collectors await – these peacekeepers. The priests of the dream goddess, their mission is to harvest the magic of the sleeping mind and use it to heal and soothe. . . and kill those who are alleged to be corrupt.
But when a conspiracy hatches inside Gujaareh’s great temple, Ehiru – the city’s most famous Collector – must question everything he knows. Someone, or something, is murdering dreamers in the name of the goddess, stalking its prey both in the alleys of Gujaareh and the dream realm. Now, Ehiru must protect the woman he was sent to kill – or watch the city ravaged by war and forbidden jutsu.
I went to Jemisin’s book even though I had never read any of her novels and had absolutely no idea what was going to happen. The learning curve is steeper than some of the fantasy stories out there, but once you get through a few chapters and understand the general premise, the story kicks in. Jemisin’s post is equal. Her descriptions do a great job of giving the reader a sense of the place. She breathes life into her characters through their interactions and even with subtle touches of style and behavior that make them stick in the reader’s mind. The book is a bit dark, which I enjoyed a lot and felt that the subject matter she was dealing with fit very well together.
