It was 1782. First officer on brig o’war….

Having recently assumed duty aboard the frigate Desperate in battle with the French ship Capricieuse off St. Kitts, Midshipman Alan Lewrie passed the examination board for the rank of lieutenant and found himself appointed brig o’war Shrike’s first officer. It’s time to flirt with the ladies, and then Lieutenant Lewrie must set off to patrol the North American coast and try to get the Muskogees and Seminoles on the British side against the American insurgents (discord with a young skin girl. red is only part of the Mission). She then returned to the Caribbean, sailing alongside Captain Horatio Nelson in the Battle for the Turks.

Navy officer and con man, Alan Lewrie was a man of his time and a hero of all time. His equals were Hornblower, Aubrey and Maturin – sailors beloved by readers and listeners worldwide.

Lots of good historical naval detail, a much more rascally and less obviously heroic main character than Sir Horatio, a bit more like Richard Sharpe with sails and an anchor. VERY well performed and Lambdin is seldom boring.
Great listening on a long drive.
