- The Near-Earth Mysteries, Book 2
A colony on Mars becomes the home of a murder plot in award-winning author The Last Dance’s Near-Earth Mysteries.
Brazilian investigator Rosalia Morais and her husband, respected American astronaut Nicolau Aames, are building a life together in Mars’ Maxwell City, the fastest-growing settlement on the planet. Good news: there are no natural predators. Bad news: there are humans. That means crime rates are also on the rise.
To ensure public safety, Rosie is appointed by the mayor as the first sheriff of the Red Planet. As soon as she builds a law enforcement team, the biggest challenge seems to be internal. Controlling the police for bribery and corruption is one thing. But when an industrialist is found among the ashes of an arson, it’s a murder.
The fire leads to questions only one man can answer – Nick’s former officer aboard the Aldrin from Earth to Mars. And Nick was still obligated to keep the officer’s secret. As loyalty changes, trust breaks and a wave of political intrigue rises, Rosie must solve a mystery that could destroy humanity’s future on Mars.
The story is engaging and amusing to me but there are a few things that annoy me. The main character doesn’t use acronyms at all and after a while it gets really annoying to hear do not, can’t, it over and over, especially when other characters use acronyms. The story is somewhat predictable and the ending feels rushed. I want to know more about what happens next. I liked the narrator of the first book better and I wish this narrator had listened to the first book because some of the accents and pronunciations have changed.
