The Left Handed Booksellers Of London / Left-Handed Booksellers of London, Book 1, Audiobook Online By: Garth Nix

A girl’s quest to find her father leads her to a large family of magical fighting booksellers who are policed by Britain’s mythical Old World as it infiltrates the modern world. From the best-selling master of the teen fantasy genre, Garth Nix.

In a slightly different London in 1983, Susan Arkshaw is searching for her father, a man she has never met. Crime boss Frank Thringley could help her, but Susan didn’t have time to ask Frank any questions before he was turned to dust by the tip of the silver hat in the extremely attractive Merlin’s hand.

Merlin is a young left-handed bookseller (one of the combatants) who, along with right-handed booksellers (the intellectuals) is a large family of magical creatures, mythical and legendary Old World policemen as it infiltrates the modern world, in addition to running several bookstores.

Susan’s search for her father begins with her mother’s possibly misremembered or misspelled last name, a ticket to the reading room and a silver cigarette case engraved with something that could be the national emblem.

Merlin has a mission of his own, which is to find the Old World entity that used ordinary criminals to kill his mother. When he and his sister, right-handed bookseller Vivien, enter the path of a ruined or shrouded police investigation years ago, they find the mission uncanny to overlap with that of the police. Susan’s service. Who or what is her father. Susan, Merlin and Vivien must find answers as the Old World perilously shifts to the New World.

Honestly, looking at the cover and title, I wouldn’t pick this book up. yeah, the synopsis sounds interesting but it’s not like it’s something I’m going to like, but I put it in the bookcase so I figured I’d just get the audio and oh my, this book what a surprise. we have both short and explosive chapters! too much action and I really like the lack of romance, yes, there’s just a little bit of trouble in it but none of their feelings for each other.

I just love this book. It’s a lovely balance of old and new worlds coming together and a wonderfully well-constructed world with new insights and ideas brought into the old and beloved country’s context/story England, Fey and the transition to more modern times. I hope to read more about the Booksellers and this exciting new world that Garth Nix has created. Also, I just love Storytellers for this. She has a lovely voice that really captivates the listener and conveys the emotions and inferences of the characters perfectly.
