The Mapmaker’s Apprentice By C. J. Archer – Audiobook Online
“The Mapmaker’s Apprentice” continues the story of India Steele and Matthew Glass, who are the main characters in the series. Set in Victorian London, the series combines elements of historical fiction, mystery, and fantasy.
In the first book, “The Watchmaker’s Daughter,” India Steele inherits a watchmaker’s shop after her father’s death. She discovers that her father was involved in a secret society known as the Prometheus Club and that he possessed a mysterious artifact called the Dirigible God. Matthew Glass, a talented American magician, enters India’s life when he seeks her help in finding the artifact.
In “The Mapmaker’s Apprentice,” India and Matthew continue their quest to locate the remaining pieces of the Dirigible God. They believe that assembling all the pieces will grant them great power and potentially save Matthew’s life. However, they face numerous challenges and obstacles along the way.
As they delve deeper into their search, India and Matthew become entangled in a web of intrigue involving dangerous individuals who also seek the artifact for their own nefarious purposes. The couple must navigate through treacherous alliances, hidden agendas, and unexpected betrayals to protect themselves and secure the remaining pieces of the Dirigible God.
Throughout their journey, India and Matthew’s relationship evolves as they learn to trust each other and rely on their unique skills. The story explores themes of friendship, loyalty, love, and personal growth against a backdrop of Victorian London’s social hierarchy and magical elements.
“The Mapmaker’s Apprentice” is praised for its engaging plot, well-developed characters, and atmospheric setting. It combines elements of mystery, adventure, and romance to create an immersive reading experience. Readers who enjoy historical fiction with a touch of fantasy and strong female protagonists will likely find this book appealing.

The Mapmaker’s Apprentice
- Glass and Steele, Book 2
- Narrated by: Marian Hussey
When an apprentice from the Mapmakers’ Guild goes missing, Matt and India are hired to find him. Working in secret as a couple, they discover that not everyone in the guild is what they appear to be, and the boy’s extraordinary map has caused envy, doubt and fear.
Possessing one of the apprentice’s magical maps, India and Matt must use their wits and India’s fledgling, untried magic to find him. But the more they investigate, the more sinister plots they uncover, including a connection between the Association of Mapmakers and Clockmakers, and an ancient magical treasure buried beneath the streets of London.
As the web of suspicion expands and the enemy draws closer, not only the apprentice’s life is in danger, but Matt’s as well. Someone will do their best to prevent him from discovering the name of the man who can fix the watch that keeps him alive. Really great length.
I like the writing and the plot, but the narration distracts me. This narrator is not as good as Matt’s American accent. It’s as if she forgot he was supposed to be American. Also, she has this kind of breathless reading. so she’s okay, but really good.
I love this historical fantasy mystery. I liked the characters and the story, from start to finish. I will definitely be reading more from this author. Exquisite. The narration is top notch too.
Very well written . The plot is very good. Interesting about the magic of watchmakers. The watchmakers’ guild is against magic and has strict control over its members. India Steele and Matt Glass investigate a missing practitioner. Very interesting overall. I hope book three will be published soon.
