Mars is a distant shore, and men stretch upon it in waves… Each wave is different, and each wave is stronger.
Ray Bradbury is a friendless storyteller, a poet of what is possible, and undeniably one of America’s most beloved authors. But of all the brilliant stars in the vast Bradbury universe, none shine more brightly than these wonderful chronicles of Earth’s settlement in the fourth world from the sun.
Bradbury’s Mars is a place of hopes, dreams and metaphors – of crystal columns and sea of fossils – where a fine layer of dust settles on the large, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It was here that the invaders came to plunder and commercialize, to grow and learn – first a stream of water, then a flood, rushing from a world with no future. future towards a promise of tomorrow. Earthlings conquered Mars… and then conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies about comfort and familiarity, and captivated by the lingering charm of a ancient, mysterious indigenous race.
Ray Bradbury’s Chronicles of Mars is a classic of 20th century literature whose prodigious power and imagination have remained undiminished with time. In connected, chronological stories, a true grandmaster once again enthralls, delights and challenges us with his vision and heart – clearly and beautifully exposed under the sun. space lights shine our strength, our weakness, our folly, and our profound humanity on a strange and breathtaking world where humanity does not belong.
The Chronicles of Mars is a collection of short stories that come together wonderfully to make for a haunting read.
The cross-cutting story takes place in the future when the earth is in turmoil and nuclear war is about to break out. Earthlings make many expeditions to the red planet to escape and search for life. You’ll have to listen to find out what happens when they get there.
Mark Boyett does a great job with the narration. I heard several other narrators for this book and Boyett did it best.
Totally worth it. Some of these stories are truly incredible stories. Surely there can’t be enough Bradbury. Got this after listening to The Illustrated Man – also highly recommended.
