He is an exceptionally brilliant storyteller and excels at both internal and external dialogue. His strands are filled with human characters you (from the whole series) will love and admire, warts and all. This series embodies the idea (l) that books are time machines.

But it’s all about the language for O’Brian. Whether maritime, medical, zoology or culinary, you’ll consult texts (or websites) to gain insight into the multitude of ancient words and phrases his characters use. . Context allows for preliminary parsing, but finite grasping requires further exploration.

The same advice applies to concepts of naval warfare by sail – O’Brian provides the reader with a rough outline, but can be understood (& assessed) more fully with a little research . (The Internet is at your fingertips, after all!) His books are entertaining but will also make you think and work a little.
