Based on the true story of a reform school that has been in operation for 111 years and turned the lives of thousands of children upside down, The Nickel Boys is a devastating, driven story that introduces a novelist The great American is writing at the height of his power and “should further cement Whitehead as one of the best of his generation”.
This book is very well written and is capable of bringing you into the lives of the characters. I had to put the book down several times to digest the horror inflicted upon these young men. This book is a grievous representation of racism and injustice and the enduring internal and external scars of abuse.
Great book!
What a wonderful story – beautifully written, brilliantly told. Heartwarming and heartbreaking. Just deeply moved. I read Underground Railroad, which I also loved. Will be eager to find more of Mr. Whitehead’s books.
