“The Odyssey” is an epic poem attributed to Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald. It is part of a larger body of works known as the “Iliad & Odyssey.” In Book 2 of “The Odyssey,” the story continues from where it left off in Book 1.

After the Trojan War, Odysseus, the protagonist, is trapped on the island of Ogygia by the nymph Calypso. Meanwhile, in Ithaca, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus face challenges of their own. The suitors, who believe Odysseus to be dead, have overrun the palace and are vying for Penelope’s hand in marriage. Telemachus, feeling powerless, seeks guidance from the council of elders.

In this book, Telemachus prepares to journey to Pylos and Sparta to seek news of his father’s whereabouts. Athena, disguised as Mentor, mentors him and encourages him to assert himself as the rightful heir of Ithaca. Telemachus addresses the council, asserting his determination to find his father and confront the suitors. He receives permission and support from the council, giving him renewed confidence.
Meanwhile, in Olympus, the gods gather and discuss Odysseus’ plight. Athena intervenes on his behalf, urging Zeus to help him return home. Zeus agrees, and Hermes is sent to Calypso’s island to deliver the message that Odysseus must be freed. Despite Calypso’s reluctance, she eventually agrees to release him.
Book 2 of “The Odyssey” sets the stage for the adventures that Odysseus and Telemachus will undertake. It highlights Telemachus’ growth and determination as he begins his journey to find his father and reclaim his kingdom. The gods play a significant role, shaping the events and protecting the hero along the way.

After the Trojan War, Odysseus had many adventures on his way back to Ithaca. Homer recounts these adventures and what happened to Odysseus after he got home. Fitzgerald’s translation is well known and considered an excellent one – I think it’s very fluid and poetic. I fell in love with this story from start to finish, and Dan Stevens’ narration heightened my enjoyment. I will probably listen to this audiobook again. Five stars all around.

It started with me absorbing the story, to the sound, the music, and the story that appealed to me. I joined Odysseus on his journey back home in the aftermath of the Trojan War. I have observed the great deeds of the gods, some working in his favor, others against him. It was an experience that was truly transported back in time to ancient Greece.
