The Other Magic is the first book in the Passage to Dawn series written by Derrick Smythe. This epic fantasy novel takes readers on a thrilling journey through a world filled with magic, adventure, and political intrigue.

The story is set in the kingdom of Talandria, a land where magic is forbidden and those who possess it are hunted down and executed. The protagonist, Talis, is a young man living in the small village of Elmbarden. He has always been fascinated by magic and dreams of becoming a mage, despite the risks involved.

One day, Talis discovers an ancient book hidden in his father’s study. The book contains forbidden knowledge about magic and its history. Intrigued by its contents, Talis begins to secretly study the book, unlocking his own magical abilities in the process.

As Talis delves deeper into the world of magic, he realizes that there is a much larger conspiracy at play. The kingdom’s ruling council, known as the Order of Moirai, has been suppressing magic for centuries to maintain their power and control over the people. Talis becomes determined to uncover the truth and challenge the oppressive regime.

Joined by a group of unlikely allies, including a skilled thief named Mithryn and a mysterious sorceress named Dennagon, Talis embarks on a dangerous quest to overthrow the Order of Moirai and restore magic to its rightful place in Talandria.

Throughout their journey, Talis and his companions face numerous challenges and encounter various magical creatures. They must navigate treacherous landscapes, battle powerful enemies, and confront their own inner demons. Along the way, they discover hidden truths about themselves and the world they inhabit.

As the story unfolds, readers are drawn into a richly detailed world filled with complex characters and intricate plot twists. The Other Magic explores themes of power, oppression, friendship, and self-discovery. It is a tale of courage, resilience, and the enduring human spirit.

The men tightened their shackles slowly, hesitantly, but Kibure didn’t resist; he can not. Any otherworldly forces that had invaded him in those moments of passion vanished from his body the moment he realized what he had done….

In a kingdom where only clerics are allowed to practice magic, Kibure’s use of inexplicable powers puts him in grave danger. In a twist of fate, the rogue priestess hired to strip him of power chooses to help him escape. Her reasons for doing so are her own, but something worse than death awaits if they can’t hide from the Empire’s most powerful holders.

This epic fantasy series will be especially enjoyed by fans of Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, Michael J. Sullivan, Edward W. Robertson and Michael Wisehart.

His book itself is excellent, the print reviews speak for itself. The author understands very well the nature of young people and captures them very well. This story is both satisfying to stand on its own but also builds an epic world one can’t help but want to return to.

The audio version of this story is awesome! I wish the voice in my head was like Greg’s…life would be so much more interesting. His performance brought these characters to life and made the transition to their world even easier.

Overall, a great performance on an inherently great read.

I really enjoyed this story and think the author is very skilled and has a lot of promise! My only complaint is that I find Aynward’s character (sp?) redundant (i.e. I find his character so annoying that I start skipping his chapters midway through the book. think I missed something notable doing this). I look forward to reading the next book (especially if the author kills Aynward)!

Do not know where to start!! I was instantly hooked.. the mystery of one’s possible power knowing his place in the world as a slave then a hostage then a student back as a hostage while searching understand the “other heroes” in the spirits of the kingdom that may attack you through the secret society man’s mind don’t know what to say finish the second book.. Greg patmore did a job great storytelling that I can’t stop listening to!
