The Poisoners: The Matt Helm Series, Book 13 – Audiobook Online

“The Poisoners,” the 13th book in the Matt Helm series, narrated by Stefan Rudnicki and directed by Claire Bloom: The story follows American spy and assassin Matt Helm, who is faced with a new challenge of stopping a group of international poisoners. The group has access to a lethal chemical, and they have already used it to kill multiple targets. Helm is tasked with identifying and neutralizing the group, which takes him on a dangerous journey across Europe. Along the way, he teams up with a beautiful Soviet agent, but he has doubts about her true motives. Helm must outsmart the poisoners and the Soviet agent to complete his mission, all while navigating a world of danger and deception.

When Matt Helm is sent to Los Angeles to investigate the fatal shooting of an agent, it’s not just a mission – it’s personal.

To get the answer he wants means clashing with two-bit hoods, a trio of beautiful women, a gang of drug dealers, and his old friend, Mr. Soo, whose government idea is about polluting America to death.

The Matt Helm series is pretty stable, but it has highs and lows in that consistency. The Poisoners is definitely one of the best, though not the best. I wouldn’t recommend starting with the series simply because I recommend listening to the series in order, as characters tend to come back and die, and events from earlier books are sometimes referenced. For those who may only know this character from the Dean Martin movies, this really isn’t Matt Helm. Helm of the book is completely serious, and the books themselves are brutal and tough. Fans of Jack Reacher or Adam Hall’s Quiller are sure to enjoy Helm.

I like to meet Matt Helm in Los Angeles (a city he doesn’t like), before he moves south to more familiar territory in Mexico. The villain’s plot is a good one and has a nice twist on what we think in the final moments. The new characters are all beautifully drawn, and I expect (and hope) to see a few survivors return.

Once again, Stefan Rudnicki has done a truly brilliant job voicing Matt Helm. He’s perfect for first-person storytelling, while also having character power and light humour. If you’ve read these books before, I recommend listening to the audio series about what Rudnicki brings to the character. I wish these audiobooks were released more often, but I’m glad they’re still out at least every six months or so. Let’s finish the series, Audible! If you release all the rest at once, I’d buy them all and tear them up – then start over.

I never tire of reading Matt Helm’s novels. They are always the best. No matter how many times I read them, they never let me down. Being able to get these books on my kindle is the best reason to own one. I know I will read them over and over again.
