The Puppetmaster’s Apprentice, written by Lisa DeSelm, is a dark fantasy novel revolving around a puppet master and his apprentice, Tavia. Tavia’s ruler, The Margrave, commissions dozens of life-size marionette soldiers to be sent to Wolfspire Hall. As the orders for soldiers increase with urgent deadlines, the puppet master’s health declines, and Pirouette, the puppet master’s daughter and Tavia’s protégé, is left to build in his stead. However, the Margrave’s son has a twisted plan and wants Pirouette to create an assassin with the magic that will bring them to life during the blue moon. With her father dying in the dungeons and war looming, Pirouette has to accept the offer, but she wonders if she is creating a masterpiece or a monster.

From the very beginning, this talented author set a beautiful dark and enchanting tone to this wonderful classic fairy tale. The author easily imagines the characters, sees their colors, feels their struggles, hears their cries and experiences their triumphs.

Similar to Lovecraft’s The Outsider, who believes himself to be a ‘stranger in this century and among those who are still men’, I love main characters, such as this one in this story, who must find a way to navigate life knowing they will never fit in and often feel compelled to keep a secret as to why – a feeling that many fans of the genre can relate to, including the genre.

Overall this is a great story to read. I am looking forward to and hope to read more from this author soon.
