Review 1: The Ranger audiobook by John S. McDonald

It is years since I first read 2 Ace Atkins novels(2001 to be precise) and had lost sight of him as an author. A chance rediscovery led me to read the first of this series of novels…I had bought the next 3 before I had finished this one. Having just crossed Mississippi by car the atmosphere of the rural and the violent was very convincing and the central character interesting as an american figure,the all too familiar ex-soldier, who doesn’t fit into his old homeland. A story of corruption,violence and discovery follows. Well worth reading.

For me, it took a little time to adapt to the author’s writing style but it in no way detracted from my enjoyment of this book.
I was introduced to some great characters and to the state of Mississippi where an interesting story was unfolded.
A good read that has left me with the intention of following Quinn Colson’s, his co-characters and their exploits in the other books of this series.

Review 3: The Ranger audiobook by A Good Read

A well written book with clear crisp prose, lots of action, an interesting plot with likeable good guys (of both genders) and villainous bad guys. I think the author could have developed Quinn’s character more fully. Even by the end of the book, he seemed fairly one-dimensional. I would have liked a bit more background than his mental ramblings into past high school experiences took the reader. His friendships with the main characters in the book could have been fleshed out more fully as well to convey the depth of the bonds. A good start, though, for a first-of-the-series book. I intend to read more of this series, and I do think Ace Atkins knows what he’s writing about. Quite an interesting author!
