The Ravagers By Donald Hamilton – Audiobook Online

The Ravagers is the eighth book in the Matt Helm series written by Donald Hamilton. Published in 1964, it continues the thrilling adventures of the protagonist, Matt Helm, a former government assassin turned secret agent.

The story begins with Matt Helm being assigned a new mission by his superiors at the secret agency known as “The Shop.” Helm is tasked with infiltrating and dismantling an international criminal organization called “The Ravagers.” This group is involved in various illegal activities, including drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and espionage.

Helm’s mission takes him to Europe, where he must navigate a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. He assumes the identity of a wealthy playboy named Bruno Cremer and gains access to The Ravagers’ inner circle. As he delves deeper into their operations, Helm discovers that The Ravagers are planning a major terrorist attack that could have devastating consequences.

Throughout the novel, Helm encounters several key characters who play significant roles in the unfolding events. One such character is Tina, a beautiful woman who becomes both an ally and a love interest for Helm. Together, they work to gather intelligence and disrupt The Ravagers’ plans.

As Helm gets closer to uncovering the truth behind The Ravagers’ operations, he faces numerous challenges and life-threatening situations. He engages in intense action sequences, including gunfights, car chases, and hand-to-hand combat. Hamilton’s writing style effectively captures the tension and suspense of these encounters, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

In addition to the action-packed plot, The Ravagers also explores Helm’s complex character. As a former assassin haunted by his past actions, Helm struggles with his own morality and the line between right and wrong. This internal conflict adds depth to the story and provides insight into Helm’s motivations and mindset.

Donald Hamilton’s writing in The Ravagers is characterized by its fast-paced narrative and meticulous attention to detail. The author’s extensive research is evident in the accuracy and authenticity of the espionage elements portrayed in the book. Hamilton’s ability to create a realistic and immersive world adds to the overall appeal of the novel.

Overall, The Ravagers is a thrilling addition to the Matt Helm series, offering readers an exciting blend of espionage, action, and suspense. Donald Hamilton’s masterful storytelling keeps readers engaged from start to finish, making it a must-read for fans of the genre.

It wasn’t a peaceful way to die, but there was nothing Matt Helm could do for his colleague. He had found him in a motel room in Canada – his once handsome face had been corroded by acid. Scratch an agent. The women won’t line up for him now. But it creates even more problems. The most likely culprit is a woman Helm has orders to protect – no matter the cost.

Originally released in the era of James Bond novels, Matt Helm’s novel is considered to be better and more realistic than Bond, earning critical acclaim and an avid audience. This eighth installment in the series is a gripping adventure packed with twists and turns and intense action.

Helm is sent to check on a late agent Greg Green, and finds him, his face ruined by acid. Registering with Mac, Helm will take on the position of Agent Green. He has to win Genevieve Drilling’s trust. She was traveling east on the Trans-Canada Highway with her daughter Penelope in a pickup and trailer. She is suspected of taking sensitive documents from her physicist husband, and possibly killing Agent Green. She also has to meet a man named Hans Reuter who, not his real name, is an enemy agent. Helm, aka David Kletinger, plays a private detective hired by her husband, Herbert Drilling, to ask Genevieve if she will bring Penelope back home. Secretly, he had to determine if she had anything to do with the other accusations and her involvement with Reuters. So much for setting up the story. Agents of various organizations are very interested in Genevieve Drilling. Elaine Harms is one such agent. Speaking of dealers, Hans Reuter is high on the interest list. All of these people are connected and supervised by Helm, whose orders are to be obeyed to the end. Will all Mac orders come true? Surprise?

This is my second Matt Helm book and you can see a few similarities with newer writers. It feels like you’re listening to a 1960s American b-movie but it’s a good story.
