The Right Attitude to Rain – Audiobook Online

“The Right Attitude to Rain” is a novel by Alexander McCall Smith, featuring the character of Isabel Dalhousie, an amateur sleuth based in Edinburgh, Scotland. In this third book of the series, Isabel faces new challenges in her personal and professional life. She is unsure about her relationship with Jamie, a younger man she is dating, and she begins to question her job as an editor of a philosophy journal. Meanwhile, her niece Cat is going through a difficult time and turns to Isabel for guidance. The main plot of the novel revolves around Isabel’s investigation into a suspicious death that occurs during a trip to a small island near the west coast of Scotland. As Isabel digs deeper into the circumstances of the death, she uncovers secrets and hidden motives that complicate the case. Along the way, she must also navigate her own thoughts and feelings about ageing, mortality, and the meaning of life.

Narrated by Davina Porter, the audiobook captures the charm and wit of McCall Smith’s writing, as well as the rich Scottish setting of the story. With her trademark curiosity and compassion, Isabel Dalhousie offers readers a refreshing perspective on the joys and challenges of living a good life.

New York Times bestselling author Alexander McCall Smith became a household name through his #1 Ladies Detective Agency series. Now he’s continuing his equally captivating Isabel Dalhousie series with a third mystery starring the brave, highly moral protagonist.

Isabel’s life is turned upside down when her cousin, Mimi, arrives from Dallas with her husband Joe. Through Mimi and Joe, Isabel meets Tom Bruce, a Texas hotshot who is about to marry someone Isabel suspects of being a gold digger. To complicate matters further, Tom seems to have an unusual level of interest in Isabel. Meanwhile, Isabel has her own feelings to deal with, not to mention the feelings of her beloved niece Cat, whose romantic interest may not be quenched.

One would have to struggle quite a bit if it wasn’t for Isabel, who was always ready to apply her well-guarded sense of morality to any situation.

I loved this whole series and found this book different from the previous two, but still great. One of the things I love most about Mr. McCall-Smith’s books is his ability to go inside each of us and bring to life all the crazy thoughts and worries we all have but hide from others. This book excels at bringing to life Ms. Dalhousy’s personal growth and new life experiences in a way that has stalled in previous books. The reader/performer is also excellent, using different voices and tones to portray each character.

If you want to solve mysteries, this book doesn’t have them, but if you want to enjoy the joys of growing up and testing yourself through the eyes of a brilliant 42-year-old woman, this is the book for you.
