Tracing the story of communism from its 19th-century roots, Brown explains both its expansion and decline in the 20th century. Even today, although communism has been widely discredited in the West, nearly a quarter of humanity still lives under its rule.

The title of my review says it all, but in case more explanation is needed: as of this writing, I am currently studying a Master of History program (my second master’s degree), where I mainly focus on the history of political and religious ideologies. Communism and Fascism have both received a great deal of attention in my work, and as a result I have become familiar with a great deal of literature relating to those ideologies. Archie Brown’s work is certainly worth owning and reading, but especially as it relates to the topics I’m focusing on.

This is my favorite type of book. Full of citations and references, backed by an extensive bibliography. Lots of strong arguments good enough to prevent any praise for this terrible period in our history. Well written, just like the reviews pointed out when I made my purchase.

The book feels well-written, detailed, and objective throughout its 600+ pages. Brown does a great job of not only describing historical events but also putting them in context and taking a broad view of his subject. In particular, he devotes several chapters not to relaying any particular facts, but instead to “building understanding” by outlining for example the meaning of a communist system, the psychological appeal of communism, the enduring reasons for communism, and so on.

The book is long, and I have to admit that in the middle (post-Stalin) years, when things were less dramatic, I sometimes found it less engaging than the beginning and the end. For the most part, though, the book is actually an interesting read. The history of communism is to a large extent both colorful and dramatic, showing both the height and depth of human nature.

After reading the book, I certainly have a better understanding of the history and origins of the society we live in today, how huge the role communism played in shaping the world today, and how different things were just thirty years ago. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in 19th and 20th century history, or interested in human nature and political ideology in general.
