  • The Unlikely Story of an American Making Wine and a New Life in France
  • By: Ray Walker

Ray Walker had a steady career in finance until a wine vacation sparked a passion he couldn’t quench. Ray neglected his job, spending hours poring over ancient French winemaking texts, learning techniques and languages, and daydreaming about the vineyards. After Ray tasted his first wine from Burgundy, he couldn’t wait any longer. He quit his job and went to France to set up a winery – with little money, limited French and almost no winemaking experience.

Driven by determination and a joy of living, he immersed himself in the extraordinary history of Burgundy’s vineyards and set out to hone his skills. Ray became a pioneer in the use of ancient techniques in modern times and founded Maison Ilan. In 2009, Ray became the first non-French winemaker to purchase grapes and produce wines from Le Chambertin, long considered one of the most unique and respected vineyards in the world.

Along with his struggle to capture the distinct terror of his wine, Ray shares enchanting stories of late-night wine tasting, cruising down the National Route on a vintage Peugeot bike with no brakes, and his journey to secure both the faith of his Burgundian neighbors and the region’s most coveted grapes. Capturing sunlight, the smell of moist earth and the taste of fine wine, The Road to Burgundy is a glorious celebration of finding one’s true path in life and taking chances – whatever the odds.

This book will make you jealous. Ray Walker has found his passion. That passion grew into a dream. Work hard, and luck has successfully fermented. A love for wine, has become a passion to make it. The road to Burgundy is a long and winding road. Full of twists and turns. Bumps, and pot wholes. But a path you will enjoy walking with Ray. I bet you’ll become so enamored that you, like me, will google Ray Walker to see what he’s up to today.

I’m not a alcoholic guy as stated. I bought the book because I love to travel. I thought I would learn about the area and some about the wine. Well, Road to Burgundy surpassed all expectations. It was read and written beautifully. Surprisingly I had trouble putting it down. Don’t be afraid to take it if you don’t know much about wine you will learn but if you are a believer in magical dreams get the book I Just Love This Book. Love it can’t stop listening. Probably one of the best books you can find on audio.
