The Road to Cromer Pier By Martin Gore – Audiobook Online
The Road to Cromer Pier is a novel written by Martin Gore. The story revolves around Janet, the protagonist, whose first love unexpectedly reappears in her life after a span of 30 years. The narrative takes readers back to a time when life was simpler for both Janet and her long-lost love.
The book reminisces about their sunny childhood beach holidays, where they would indulge in activities such as building sandcastles, swimming in the sea, and enjoying ice creams under the warm sun. These idyllic memories evoke a sense of nostalgia and innocence. The mention of fish and chips brings to mind the quintessential British seaside experience, with the aroma of freshly fried fish wafting through the air and the sound of seagulls overhead.
Furthermore, the reference to “big copper pennies clunking into one-armed bandits” alludes to the classic arcade games that were popular during their youth. One-armed bandits were mechanical slot machines that required players to insert coins and pull a lever to spin the reels. The clunking sound of the coins being deposited into the machine adds another layer of nostalgia to the story.
Overall, The Road to Cromer Pier explores themes of lost love, reminiscence, and the passage of time. It delves into the complexities of reconnecting with someone from the past and how it can stir up emotions and memories long forgotten.

The Road to Cromer Pier
- Narrated by: Penny Scott-Andrews
Janet’s first love unexpectedly came after 30 years. It’s the simpler time for both. Childhood sunny beach vacations, fish and chips and big copper coins jostling an armed robber.
The Wells family has run the Cromer Pier Summer Special for generations. But now it’s 2009 and the recession is in full swing. Owner Janet Wells and her daughter Karen are facing an uncertain future. The show must go on, and Janet bets on a fading star talent. But both the star and the other actors have demons. This is a story about love, loyalty, and luvvies. The road to Cromer Pier could be the end of their career, or it could just be a new beginning.
Very powerful plot put together that will keep you entertained as you listen to the amazing Storyteller Penny Andrews who brought this insight into the entertainment industry to life, we all enjoyed the well done Road to Cromer Pier
I have heard the book The Road to Cromer Pier. It was narrator Penny Scott-Andrews who rendered the character’s voice brilliantly. The variety of voices is beautifully presented, I especially like her Welsh accent, Lauren Evans’ voice. I have to admit that at the beginning of the book, the narrator’s casual voice, when she’s out of character, reminds me very much of someone reading a story to children. It’s a little annoying when a sad moment is going on and it’s told in a vibrantly cheerful voice. BUT, that said, as I get more used to it, plus appreciate how good her features are, I soon won’t mind anymore.
I had a feeling watching The Road to Cromer Pier I would connect with the story, and I wasn’t wrong. Being a theater kid myself, I miss the days when I lived and breathed musicals, and when life revolved around rehearsals and performances. The fact that this novel also has a coastal setting only increases its value. If it comes with a barista delivering latte and chocolate croissants every three chapters, it couldn’t be more perfectly designed for my taste.
