Summer 1924: During a sparkling party by the lake of a large country house in England, a young poet takes his own life. The only witnesses were sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, and they would never speak to each other again.
Winter 1999: Grace Bradley, 98, a one-time maid of the Riverton Manor, is visited by a young director working on a film about the poet’s suicide. Awakened ghosts and memories, long deposited in Grace’s dark mind, began to sneak back through the cracks. A shocking secret threatens to reveal itself – something history has forgotten but Grace could never do.
Set in an Edwardian summer that is finally giving way to the decadent twenties, The Shifting Fog is a multi-million-selling best-selling novel and one of the most successful debuts of all time. .
Is this the author’s first novel? I will read more because she is a genius. It reads like a classic, only the writing is much better. She guides the reader between present and past tense seamlessly without breaking chapters, which is difficult. I have struggled with that in seven novels of my own.
Her use of unique metaphors and tone of voice is very engaging and evocative. Take your time and enjoy this one.
I love Kate Morton’s books. You get caught up in the story. And read to the end. She always leaves you guessing until the very last page. Really enjoyed this story!
