Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern supernatural thriller set in the ’90s about a women’s book club that must protect its suburban community from a stranger. The mysterious and handsome turned out to be a real monster.

Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a good-bye kiss in the morning, her children have lives of their own, her aging mother-in-law needs constant care and she always one step behind in her endless thanks and lists. housework. The only thing she looks forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women, united by a love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings, they can talk about the Mansons as well as about marriage, motherhood, and neighbor gossip.

This predictable pattern is reversed when Patricia meets James Harris, a handsome stranger who moves into the neighborhood to care for his elderly aunt and ends up joining the book club. James is sensitive and has good reading comprehension, he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in 20 years. But there’s something wrong with him. He doesn’t have a bank account, he doesn’t like going out during the day, and Patricia’s mother-in-law insists that she knew him as a girl, an impossibility.

When the local kids go missing, Patricia and the book club members begin to suspect James is more like Bundy than Beatnik, but no one outside the book club believes them. Did they read too many true crime books or did they invite a real monster into their home?

I came across this book very quickly, it’s been a long time since I’ve been so enthralled with the story. Grady Hendrix, his writing style, is so light, it makes you unable to sit still and definitely want to write more. I only read half of this book before deciding to buy at least two more of his novels. Really looking forward to his other work, highly recommend this.

Absolutely fantastic depiction of women, friendship, and the ’90s. The horrors of the supernatural combined with men’s indifference towards their longtime mate make for horror scenes horror. My new favorite book.
