The Splendid and the Vile
- A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz
- Narrated by: John Lee, Erik Larson
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded the Netherlands and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia have fallen, and the evacuation of Dunkirk is only two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler waged a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 British. Churchill’s job was to hold his country together and convince President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally – and ready to fight to the end.
In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows, in cinematic detail, how Churchill taught the British people the “art of bravery”. It’s a story about political predicament, but it’s also an intimate domestic drama, set in Churchill’s hometown, Checkers; his wartime retreat, Ditchley, where he and his entourage arrived when the moon was at its brightest and the threat of bombs was highest; and, of course, 10 Downing Street in London.
Drawing on diaries, original archives, and once-secret intelligence reports – some of which were only recently published – Larson offers a new lens on London’s darkest year through a daily experience. the day of Churchill and his family: his wife, Clementine; their youngest daughter, Mary, who resisted her parents’ wartime protection; their son, Randolph, and his beautiful but unhappy wife, Pamela; Pamela’s nefarious lover, a dashing American emissary; and advisers in Churchill’s “Secret Circle”, whom he turned to in his most difficult moments.
The Splendid and the Vile takes listeners out of today’s political turmoil and back into a time of true leadership, in the face of unrelenting terror, eloquence, courage, and perseverance. Churchill brought a nation and a family together.
Great overview of one of the most memorable periods in the history of Western civilization. So it’s a must read for everyone.
The Splendid and the Vile is the story of the London Blitz, the Churchill family, and London’s defiance of Nazi Germany. The book not only delves into the politics of the time and the cruelty of war, but also delves into the personal lives of Churchill’s family and friends. It’s an interesting panorama of a pivotal year in history.
Erik Larson is an excellent non-fiction author. I love how his books are so easy to read. They read as fiction but not fiction. I learned a lot of interesting things in this book. But also by writing about the human life of Churchill, family and friends, I find myself at times laughing and at times terrified. I feel for them and their trials and tribulations. The short chapters are my favourite, and also include German perspectives at the time.
