Republished 50 years later to coincide with the release of the Oscar-nominated film of the same name, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin with an all-star cast, this is the classic take on a perhaps infamous story The most, and certainly the most exciting, experiment in recent American history.

In the fall of 1969, eight prominent anti-Vietnam War activists were put on trial for plotting to riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. One of the eight, Bobby Seale, the Black Panther co-founder, was literally tied and gagged in court by order of judge Julius Hoffman, and his case was kept separate from those of the others. other.

Activists, including Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Tom Hayden, and their attorneys, William Kunstler and Leonard Weinglass, assert that the First Amendment is on trial. Their witness was a virtual person of the 1960s counterculture: Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, Arlo Guthrie, Judy Collins, Norman Mailer, among them.

The defendants repeatedly interrupted to protest what they felt was the judge’s unjust ruling. The trial became a circus, and received extensive media coverage. The convictions that resulted were later overturned on appeal, but the trial remains a political and cultural rock, a mirror of deep divisions in the country. The Chicago 7 Trial includes highlights from the trial’s testimony with a brief epilogue describing what then happened to the main characters.

After watching the movie recently, I wanted to take a closer look at the trial. The book is made up of actual test transcripts and is more eye-opening in nature. Makes me wonder how many people are rotting in prison because of corrupt judges and incompetent lawyers. Making our view of our government look a bit scary and that could be a very sad story in the years to come.

This precious book enlivens recent history, is a reminder to our elders of the divisions of those years, and a glimmer of hope that our broken nation may find a new one. healthier path ahead. Thanks to the editors for giving us all a gift of laughter, tears, memories and hope. And today, we need to ask, where are our clowns? We need Abbie Hoffman.
