The Turning By Tim Winton – Audiobook Online

The Turning is a collection of short stories written by Australian author Tim Winton. Published in 2005, the book consists of seventeen interconnected stories that explore themes of love, loss, and redemption set against the backdrop of the Western Australian coast.

Each story in The Turning is self-contained but shares common characters and settings, creating a sense of continuity throughout the collection. The narratives are set in the fictional coastal town of Angelus, capturing the essence of life in a small community and the struggles faced by its inhabitants.

The book opens with the story “Big World,” which introduces Vic Lang, a young boy who dreams of escaping his mundane life in Angelus. As he grows older, Vic becomes disillusioned with his aspirations and finds himself trapped in a cycle of disappointment and regret.

Other stories in the collection delve into the lives of various characters, including Vic’s troubled childhood friend, Jerra Nilsam, who grapples with personal demons and a strained relationship with his father. In “Abbreviation,” Jerra reflects on his past and contemplates the meaning of family and forgiveness.

Another notable story is “Aquifer,” which follows Max Lamb, a middle-aged man haunted by memories of his deceased wife. Max’s grief leads him to seek solace in an affair with a younger woman, but he soon realizes that he cannot escape his past or find true happiness through infidelity.

Throughout The Turning, Winton explores themes of isolation, longing, and the search for identity. The characters in each story are flawed and complex, struggling to navigate their relationships and find purpose in their lives. Winton’s prose is evocative and lyrical, capturing the beauty and harshness of the Australian landscape.

The collection also touches on environmental issues, highlighting the impact of human activity on nature. In stories like “Damaged Goods” and “Family,” Winton examines the destructive consequences of industrialization and the loss of connection to the natural world.

The Turning is a poignant and introspective collection of stories that delves into the complexities of human emotions and relationships. Through his vivid storytelling, Tim Winton offers a profound exploration of the human condition and the universal desire for meaning and connection.

2007 Audie Award Finalist, From the internationally acclaimed and best-selling author of Dirt Music, comes a brilliant work of fiction that will resonate with readers everywhere.
These are all kinds of turns – a change of heart, an unpleasant surprise, a slow awakening, a sudden detour – where people struggle against the terrible weight of their past and challenge the lives they have created. out for yourself. Crafted as beautifully and tenderly as they are facing, these tragic stories examine the darkness and weakness of ordinary people and celebrate moments when light shines through.

This is my fourth Tim Winton audiobook and it’s just as great as the other three.
So cleverly put together, it sounds like a short story at first, but it’s all interconnected and related. It’s just beautiful, sad, and thought-provoking. I like the musical mix between each chapter.
The reader has no fault with my ears, perfect reading for the content.

There was something here that Winton failed to capture in his later books. The feeling of loss, longing, regret that somehow life went its own way when you thought you owned it all.

Overall, I really don’t like Tim Winton’s writing. But I was teaching this book to a group of senior English students, and I really got it. I like these textures. I think I like the first story the most. I can appreciate the subtlety of how these human experiences are portrayed. And every once in a while, there’s a really great sequence of words.

The narration is one of the better experiences I’ve had with an audiobook – sometimes in a soft tone and always well paced. I will listen to this song while washing the dishes and feel at peace

Oh, I admire Tim Winton so much. To be able to write like that! This book has some great stories, and the fact that they are all set in the same small town and some involve the same character at different stages in his life is very unique thing. I just love the tone of the stories, the way they lay out how ‘life’ has happened to these people and this is how they can deal with it. This is my second Tim Winton book (after Cloudstreet) and I’m glad there’s more for me to delve into. It’s great that you discovered a new (new to me!) writer with such great talent.

It was my first Winton novel – it’s technically a collection of related and interconnected short stories with a major crime story at the heart: corrupt cops dealing with drugs in the city. a small Australian town Angelus. There are several stories of individuals who experienced one major life-changing event or another. Many sad stories, some full of violence, poverty, sadness, abuse but all touch the heart deeply. Very believable both plot and characters. The story is kept simple without lengthy literary descriptions or reflections, it’s just a quick narration of events and that makes for an engaging read, the kind that’s hard to ignore once you’ve started. read. Suffice it to say it encouraged me to learn more about Tim Winton’s prose.
