The Wrecker/ An Isaac Bell Adventure, Book 2 – Audiobook Online
In “The Wrecker,” Clive Cussler takes readers on an exhilarating journey with his protagonist, Isaac Bell. The story is set in 1907 and follows the adventures of the Van Dorn Detective Agency’s top operative, Isaac Bell. The plot revolves around a mysterious figure known as “The Wrecker,” who is causing chaos and destruction along the Pacific coast.
Plot Summary: Isaac Bell is tasked with unraveling the mystery behind a series of train wrecks that are disrupting the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad. As he delves deeper into the case, he discovers that The Wrecker is not only causing havoc but also targeting the railroad’s key figures. Bell faces numerous challenges as he races against time to stop The Wrecker and prevent further catastrophe.
In The Chase, Clive Cussler introduced a charismatic new hero: tall, lean, no-nonsense detective Isaac Bell, who, driven by a sense of justice, traveled across America in the early 20th century in pursuit of thieves and murderers – and sometimes much worse criminals. .
It was 1907, a year of financial crisis and labor unrest. Wrecks, fires, and explosions sabotaged the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Cascades Express line, and in desperation, the railroad hired the legendary Van Dorn Detective Agency. Van Dorn sends his best man and Bell quickly discovers that a mysterious saboteur is haunting the wandering forests of the West, a man known as the Wrecker, who recruits accomplices came from all over to attack the railroad, then kill them afterward. The Wrecker traverses the vast spaces of the American West as if he had wings, striking wherever he pleases, causing untold damage and loss of life. Who is he? What does he want? Is he a striker? An anarchist? A revolutionary determined to replace the “privileged few”? A criminal mastermind working on some as-yet-unexplained plan?
Whoever he is, whatever his motives, the Wrecker knows how to create maximum destruction, and Bell feels that he is far from complete – that, in fact, the Wrecker is building stage a grand action unlike anything he has committed before. If Bell doesn’t stop him in time, more than just one railroad could be at risk – it could be the future of the entire country.
Filled with intricate plots and brilliant set pieces, The Wrecker is one of the most exciting horror films in years.
I’m not usually a fan of historical fiction, but I’m a Cussler fan and I’m intrigued by his new literary hero, Detective Isaac Bell. The Wrecker is set in 1907 and pits Bell against the Wrecker, a saboteur intent on destroying the Southern Pacific Railroad’s newest high-speed line. The Wrecker causes death and destruction wherever he strikes, and the railroad hires Bell to stop the attacks.
The Wrecker is a great sequel to Book 1, The Chase. Railway enthusiasts in particular will love the in-depth descriptions of the trains’ workings, and the Wrecker himself is a great villain. To be honest, the book was a little long for my liking – at almost 600 pages, it felt like there were a lot of unnecessary details and descriptions about things that had little to do with the story. Like Cussler’s NUMA heroes Dirk Pitt and Kurt Austin, Bell seemed invincible, able to shrug off beatings and gunshot wounds as mere annoyances on his quest for justice his. The action scenes are as usual, over the top but still highly entertaining.
